The number 12 is a unique, interesting, and very useful number. The unique usefulness of the number 12 has been recognized by mathematicians, scientists, meta-physicists, and society in general since the beginning of recorded human history.

The usefulness of this number derives from its divisibility. There are relatively few small numbers that can be evenly divided into so many subsets. The number 12 can be evenly divided into halves, thirds, fourths, sixths, and twelfths. Multiples of 12, by definition, retain this divisibility.

The inherent divisibility is the reason that the number 12, and its multiplies, are so intertwined into our society. We use it here, there, and everywhere for our time logistics. Roulette

Roulette loves the number 36 (3 x 12). It makes for a nice, long 3-number by 12-number table that lots of players can gather around. And the rampant divisibility of this number enables players to get themselves in trouble in all sorts of ways; particularly so when that pesky zero or zero-zero drops by. Players can bet on groups of 1,2,3,4,6,12, and 18 numbers in a multitude of combinations. There's more, but you get the idea.

Dice

As far as the game of dice is concerned, the number 36 ((3 x 12) = (6 x 6)), along with it's inherent attributes, is an integral number. You have 2 cubes with 6 sides each, enabling the existence of 11 numbers via a 6 x 6 matrix of 36 combinations. The integration part comes in where as the probability of any particular combination of dice numbers showing is a direct function of the 6 x 6 matrix.

The 12 Month Calendar


The general consensus is that the Egyptians came up with the first 12 month calendar. The Romans later modified it, but retained the 12 month format. Both cultures abandoned any attempt to match the calendar with the lunar cycle; all emphasis was placed on the solar cycle.

The innate attribute of 12 months being evenly divisible into quarters and halves has been in use ever since. The term “bimonthly“ is used to define both “once-every-two-months” and “twice-a-month”.

There are no worldwide legal or official designations as to when the 4 seasons start and end. Different cultures and locations have their own designations.

The 2 x 12 = 24 Hour Clock


The division of the day into 24 (2*12) increments (hours) has been in existence since the beginning of timekeeping. Followed by the designation of minutes (1/(5*12)) which equals 1/60 which equals 1 minute. Followed by seconds (1/(5*12)) which equals 1/60 which equals 1 second.

12:00 AM versus 12:00 PM

The best way to remember which is which is to think of 12 as 0; i.e. the beginning of the time period, not the ending. Thus, 12:00 AM is 00.00 AM; which is the middle of the night and the beginning of a new day. Conversely, 12:00 PM and 12:01 PM is 00:00 PM and 00:01 PM which is the beginning of the afternoon. 12:00 AM is the start of the new day; 12:00 PM is noon and the start of the afternoon.

There are 3 * 12 * 10 = 360 degrees in a circle. This is the basis of our geographic coordinate system. Reference points are defined using latitude and longitude.

Latitude is the 0 to 90 degree angle between the equator and the north/south poles. The equator is latitude 0. The north and south poles are latitude 90 degrees N or 90 degrees S respectively. Latitudinal lines are “horizontal” and parallel to the equator. The latitudinal line “half-way” between the equator and the north/south pole is 45 degrees N or 45 degrees S, depending on which pole is referenced.

Longitude coordinates are the “vertical” lines; they run side side-by-side, but are not parallel due to their convergence at the poles. Longitude 0 is called the Prime Meridian (meridian and longitude are synonyms) and is located in Greenwich (near London), England. Locations to the west of the Prime Meridian (Greenwich) are defined as being in the western hemisphere; locations east of the prime Meridian are in the eastern hemisphere. Longitudinal coordinates are as two half-circles: 0 to 180 degrees W; 0 to 180 degrees E.

Kidneys are vital organs, performing some of the most important functions in our body. They are sophisticated processing machines that keep our blood clean and chemically balanced.

It goes without saying that the more you know about your body and your health, the more control you have over your life.

As a Nephrologist, specializing in Chronic Kidney Disease and Hypertension, I decided to share some interesting information with my readers, pertaining to Kidney disease and Kidney health. I hope you will find the facts outlined below interesting and useful.

  • Our Kidneys have a higher blood flow than our brain, liver or heart.



  • The Kidneys absorb and distribute 99.9% of the blood volume. Only 0.1% of the blood filtered turns into urine.



  • Each Kidney is about 5 inches long (13 centimeters) and weighs approximately 4 to 6 ounces (120-140 grams).



  • The Kidneys filter almost 200 quarts of blood every day.



  • 1 in 9 adults in America, or at least 26 million Americans, have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) and millions more are at increased risk. According to The American Society of Nephrology, the number of people diagnosed with Kidney disease has doubled for the last decade. I would strongly recommend blood and urine tests to detect early signs of the disorder.




  • Risk factors for CKD include: diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, obesity, advanced age, family history of CKD, and tobacco use.


 

  • Each kidney has about a million tiny nephrons. A nephron is the basic functional unit of the kidney. It has a group of tiny blood vessels called a glomerulus, the small structure responsible for filtering and cleaning blood as it flows through the kidney. Most kidney diseases attack the nephrons, causing them to lose filtering capacity. Interestingly, Kidney diseases destroy the nephrons slowly and silently. The damage will become apparent only years or even decades later.



  • The most frequent causes of Kidney disease are Diabetes and High blood pressure. Other causes include, Glomerulonephritis (inflammation of the glomerulus) and Polycystic Kidney Disease (an inherited disease, causing large cysts to form in the kidney). What most people don’t realize is that taking over-the-counter pain-relieving medicines, can also result in Kidney disorder. Please keep in mind that these medicines can be toxic to your Kidneys and may even provoke some serious damage.



  • Heart disease is very common among people with Chronic Kidney Disease. CKD patients are more likely than the general population to develop heart condition. That’s why following all the necessary steps to prevent heart problems is absolutely crucial. What they should do is eat healthy foods, exercise on a regular basis and kick a smoking habit (in case they smoke). CKD patients should cut down on foods that contain saturated fat, such as eggs, milk, cheese and fried foods. Healthy foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids should become a part of their dietary regime. I cannot stress enough the importance of salmon, albacore tuna, sardines, walnuts or flaxseed oil in your diet.



  • Patients with kidney dysfunction commonly develop anemia as a result of decreased hormone production in kidneys. Anemia can result in fatigue and a diminished functional status. Those with CKD and anemia can be treated effectively with medication.



  • Kidney failure is not always permanent, which is great news for many people. In some cases of acute kidney failure, the kidney function returns with conservative management. Unfortunately, most causes of kidney disease are more insidious. They can progress slowly but steadily and without the proper management can lead to end stage kidney disease, requiring renal replacement therapy.



  • Dialysis is the most common therapy for people suffering from end stage kidney failure. There are two types of Dialysis – hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis. In hemodialysis, an artificial kidney used to remove waste, extra chemicals and fluid from your blood. The cleansed blood is returned to your body in a continuous circuit. Hemodialysis is the most common way to treat advanced Kidney failure. Typically it requires three treatments a week in a monitored dialysis center. The procedure may last up to three or four hours. In peritoneal dialysis, your blood is thoroughly cleaned within your body. What happens is your doctor places a plastic tube into your abdomen to make access. Sterile fluid is infused and wastes and excess fluid are removed. Peritoneal dialysis is done daily at home.



  • Dialysis and Kidney Transplantation can extend the lives of people with Kidney failure. Fortunately, there are ways to prevent Kidney disease. Kidney-related disorders usually occur gradually over time. That’s why it is always better to identify potential disorder early on. Time is of the essence – early detection can slow the progression of CDK and protect your health.



  • Only one donated Kidney is needed to replace two failed Kidneys. The life expectancy of someone who donates a kidney is the same as the general population. There is no increased risk of kidney disease if a well-screened person donates a kidney to someone who is in need of a transplant.



  • Although most back pain has nothing to do with the kidneys, some kidney-related conditions could lead to back ache. The most common root of kidney-related back pain is a kidney stone. Please note that infections could be a less common but potentially serious cause of a kidney disorder. If you experience dull one-sided pain in the upper back, accompanied by fever and urinary symptoms, you should contact your healthcare provider. This may be a sign of a serious condition.

  1. The average adult heart beats 72 times a minute; 100,000 times a day; 3,600,000 times a year; and 2.5 billion times during a lifetime.

  2. Though weighing only 11 ounces on average, a healthy heart pumps 2,000 gallons of blood through 60,000 miles of blood vessels each day.

  3. A kitchen faucet would need to be turned on all the way for at least 45 years to equal the amount of blood pumped by the heart in an average lifetime.

  4. The volume of blood pumped by the heart can vary over a wide range, from five to 30 liters per minute.

  5. Every day, the heart creates enough energy to drive a truck 20 miles. In a lifetime, that is equivalent to driving to the moon and back.

So make sure you don’t think, “Why do I suck?” 50,000 times a day, or suck ye shall.

That’s why even left-brained people can have times of the day when they are more creative and right-brained people can sometimes get their taxes in order.

17. Leaving aside degenerative brain disease, your brain never loses the ability to learn and change because it’s effectively plastic and constantly rewiring itself.

Leopards may indeed not change their spots, but you’re not a Leopard and you can change yourself and your brain is up for the challenge.

18. It ‘s a self development urban myth that we only use 10% of our brain. We use it all and if you don’t believe me cut a bit out and see what happens.

Note: Unfortunately the new movie, Limitless due out soon is going to re-embed this myth as it’s based on the story line that we use 20% of our brain and you can take a pill to access the other 80%. Ho-hum.

19. If you were to measure your brainwave activity you wouldn’t see any drop off when you’re asleep.

You may be napping, but your brain is still working hard pumping your heart, digesting your food, maintaining your blood pressure and much more to make sure you don’t wake up dead.

20. Research has shown that the hippocampus which which deals with visual-spatial awareness, is larger in London Taxi drivers than normal people. London ‘cabbies’ have to spend months, sometimes years, learning literally every street in the Capital before they are allowed a license.

This process is known as ‘The Knowledge’ and it literally enlarges that part of their brain. Unfortunately, it doesn’t help them with anger management issues when cyclists get in their way.

21. Until relatively recently scientists thought that the brain was the only area of the human body that didn’t generate new cells. We now know that’s not true and the brain does reproduce shiny new cells for you to use

Mirror neurons weren’t even known to exist prior to the early 1990’s, but now there is a growing belief in the scientific community they are responsible for us feeling empathy toward others.

23. When somebody takes cocaine their pleasure center (nucleus accumbens) lights up and dopamine and serotonin are released. Fortunately, you don’t have to blow your life savings, act like a dick and lose your nasal lining to get similar results.

Giving to charity or helping people in need also activates the nucleus accumbens. What a win/win that is, eh?

Your Brain Is a Dumbass


24. Multi-tasking is a self development urban myth. You simply cannot do it efficiently no matter what manufacturers of smart phones want you to believe.

According to the University of Utah, there are a few people (about 2.5% of the population) who can do two things consciously* at once without seeing any degradation in performance.

They are called super-taskers.

However, for most people all the brain is doing is going backwards and forwards very quickly and giving the illusion of multi-tasking. The reality is performance is inhibited by this approach not improved.

* I do appreciate that you can do multiple things unconsciously at once such as driving and talking. (Not texting though!)

25. Your brain is constantly lying to you when you have your eyes open. Because it cannot deal with every single detail that you’re looking at, the occipital lobe is joining the dots with what itpresumes is there.

26. Similarly, your brain doesn’t record memories like video as it would be easy to assume. It takes snapshots of the more important bits and then when you recall the event it guesses what happened in between based on prior experience.

27. Your brain finds it very easy to create false memories largely because of the above and the fact that it spends so much time guessing what’s happening.

When scientists exposed people to Photoshopped images of themselves at various event years prior they were soon able to explain what they were doing and recall the event with clarity even though they were never there.

There will be events you swear blind happened the way you remember, but never actually did. A sobering thought.

28. The reason why some Chinese born people struggle to pronounce words like ‘fried’ is not because they can’t be arsed to learn them, as I ignorantly and embarrassingly believed when I was younger.

It’s because no similar pronunciation is needed in the Chinese language.

Therefore, if they are not exposed to the English language before around the age of 3, that part of the brain is allocated to other purposes.

29. Your brain is fairly crap at distinguishing between what’s really happening and what you are merely imagining. Which is why horror films scare people and porn films, er…ahem, well you know.

30. The brain is very poor at concentrating for long periods of time and needs to clear it’s head so to speak about every 90 minutes or so.

Which is why if you’re delivering training and you want to maximize results, you should allow people to take lots of mini breaks rather than one long break for lunch.
